Galatians Chapter 3
Galatians
3 argues that salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ, not by
following the Law. Paul reminds the Galatians they received the Holy
Spirit through faith, not works, and that Abraham was also justified by
faith long before the law was given. He explains the Law's purpose was
to reveal sin, and Christ redeemed us from the Law's curse by becoming
a curse for us, allowing everyone to receive the promised Spirit
through faith.
Verse 1: What is the truth of
the Gospel?
O
foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth,
before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?
Galatians 3:1
Answer:
Jesus Christ died for your sins.
Verses 2-3: How do we receive
the Holy Spirit?
This
only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the
law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the
Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Galatians 3:3
Answer:
By the hearing of faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 4: How do we suffer for
God? Matthew 5:11-12
Have
you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Galatians 3:4
Answer:
Are we suffering for Jesus Christ?
Verse 5: How is the Holy
Spirit manifested in our lives?
Therefore,
He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it
by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Galatians 3:5
Answer:
By the hearing of faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 6: How did Abraham
obtain righteousness?
just
as Abraham “believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Galatians 3:6
Answer:
Abraham believed God.
Verse 7: How do we become
children of Abraham?
Therefore,
know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. Galatians 3:7
Answer:
By faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 8: How are we justified
before God?
And
the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations
shall be blessed.” Galatians 3:8
Answer:
By faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 9: How do we become
blessed?
So,
then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. Galatians 3:9
Answer:
By faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 10: Why are people
cursed who try to justify themselves?
For as
many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written,
“Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in
the book of the law, to do them.” Galatians 3:10
Answer:
They will fall short of perfection.
Verse 11: How do justified
people live before God?
But
that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the
just shall live by faith.” Galatians 3:11
Answer:
By faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 12: Why is the law not
faith?
Yet
the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.”
Galatians 3:12
Answer:
The law represents works.
Verse 13: How did Jesus Christ
redeem us?
Christ
has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it
is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), Galatians 3:13
Answer:
Jesus Christ became a curse for us.
Verse 14: How do we receive
the promise of the Holy Spirit?
that
the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we
might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Galatians 3:14
Answer:
We receive the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ.
Verses 15-18: Why is the
promise of God greater than the law?
Brethren,
I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is
confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it. Now to Abraham and his Seed were the
promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And
to your Seed,” who is Christ. And this I say that the law, which was four
hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed
before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. For if
the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to
Abraham by promise. Galatians 3:15-18
Answer:
The promise of the Messiah preceded the law by 430 years.
Verses 19-20: What was the
purpose of the law?
What
purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till
the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through
angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator does not mediate for one only,
but God is one. Galatians 3:19-20
Answer:
To show us our transgressions and the need for a Messiah.
Verses 21-22: Why did the law
confine us under sin?
Is the
law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a
law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by
the law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by
faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Galatians 3:21-22
Answer:
Salvation is sincere belief or faith in Jesus Christ.
Verses 23-25: What was the
purpose of the law?
But
before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith
which would afterward be revealed. Therefore, the law was our tutor to bring us
to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we
are no longer under a tutor. Galatians 3:23-25
Answer:
The law drives us to Jesus Christ for salvation in faith.
Verse 26: What makes us a
child of God?
For you are all sons of God
through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26
Answer: Faith in Jesus Christ.
Verse 27: What public
confession of Jesus Christ should we do?
For as
many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Galatians 3:27
Answer:
Believers should be baptized into Jesus Christ.
Verse 28: What makes all
Christians equal with one another?
There
is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither
male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
Answer:
All believers are one in Jesus Christ.
Verse 29: What makes us heirs
to the promise of God?
And if
you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the
promise. Galatians 3:29
Answer:
Faith in Jesus Christ gives you the promise of salvation.
