Galatians Chapter 5

Galatians 5 is a summary of Christian freedom from the law, emphazing that salvation is through faith in Christ and not through works like circumcision. The chapter contrasts the "works of the flesh" (such as immorality, hatred, and drunkenness) with the "fruit of the Spirit" (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control). It calls believers to use their freedom not as an excuse for sin but to serve one another in love.

Verse 1: How are we to serve Jesus Christ?
Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1
Answer: Serve in liberty that is free from religious rituals.

Verse 2: The death of Jesus Christ under the law becomes what?
Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. Galatians 5:2
Answer: Following the law eliminates salvation through Jesus Christ.

Verse 3: What happens when you try to keep one point of the law?
And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. Galatians 5:3
Answer: A person will become a slave to keeping the whole law.

Verse 4: What does keeping the law accomplish?
You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. Galatians 5:4
Answer: Keeping the law verifies that you are not saved.

Verse 5: How do we wait for the hope of righteousness?
For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Galatians 5:5
Answer: Through the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ we have hope.

Verse 6: What is important for us Christians?
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. Galatians 5:6
Answer: Nothing is important except faith working through love.

Verses 7-9: Why is the law so dangerous?
You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. Galatians 5:7-9
Answer: Obeying a portion of the law corrupts faith in Jesus Christ.

Verse 10: Who should we put our confidence in?
I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is. Galatians 5:10
Answer: We must put our confidence in Jesus Christ.

Verses 11-12: What are religious people offended of?
And I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why do I still suffer persecution? Then the offense of the cross has ceased. I could wish that those who trouble you would even cut themselves off! Galatians 5:11-12
Answer: People loving rules and regulations are offended by the cross.

Verse 13: How are we to use Christian liberty?
For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13
Answer: Believers will serve one another in love with liberty.

Verse 14: How is the law fulfilled?
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:14
Answer: We are to love our neighbor as ourselves.
Cross Reference: Matthew 22:39 and Mark 12:31

Verse 15: What are we to avoid?
But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! Galatians 5:15
Answer: Believers are to avoid fighting amongst us.

Verses 16-18: Who frees us from the law?
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Galatians 5:16-18
Answer: The Holy Spirit will free you lusting after religious rituals.

Verses 19-21: What keeps us from the kingdom of God?
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
Answer: Anyone practicing evil will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Verses 22-23: What is the evidence of the Holy Spirit?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
Answer: The Holy Spirit is evidence of righteousness.

Verses 24-25: How are we to live in the Holy Spirit?
And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:24-25
Answer: The Holy Spirit eliminates your passions and desires.

Verse 26: What is evidence of not being guided by the Holy Spirit?
Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:26
Answer: Being led by the Holy Spirit eliminates sin.
