Hour of Jesus Christ
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ did not arrive at the beginning of His ministry.
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother
of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to
the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to
Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your
concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” John 2:1-4
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ will produce spiritual worship.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will
neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You
worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is
of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father
is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship
Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:21-24
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ will produce eternal life.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him
who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but
has passed from death into life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour
is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of
God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in
Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has
given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of
Man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are
in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done
good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the
resurrection of condemnation. John 5:24-29
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ did not arrive while He taught in the temple.
Then Jesus cried out, as He taught in the temple, saying, “You both
know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself,
but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. But I know Him, for I
am from Him, and He sent Me.” Therefore, they sought to take Him; but
no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. And many
of the people believed in Him, and said, “When the Christ comes, will
He do more signs than these which this Man has done?” John 7:28-31
The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of Yourself;
Your witness is not true.” Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I
bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came
from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and
where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. And
yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am
with the Father who sent Me. It is also written in your law that the
testimony of two men is true. I am One who bears witness of Myself, and
the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.” Then they said to Him,
“Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My
Father. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”
These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple;
and no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come. John
8:13-20
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ was the purpose of His coming into the world.
But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man
should be glorified. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of
wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies,
it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, and he who
hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone
serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be
also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor. Now My soul is
troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But
for this purpose I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then
a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will
glorify it again.” John 12:23-28
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ was His suffering and death on the Preparation Day.
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had
come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved
His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. John 13:1
Note: Jesus Christ prepares disciples for His death and resurrection.
Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are
you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and
you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’?
Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the
world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be
turned into joy. A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her
hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no
longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born
into the world. Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again
and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you.
John 16:19-22
Note: The hour of Jesus Christ to suffer, die, and be glorified had arrived.
Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may
glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He
should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is
eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have
finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father,
glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You
before the world was. John 17:1-5
Note: The Father’s will was that the Son would suffer and die for the sins of the world.
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O
My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless,
not as I will, but as You will.” Matthew 26:39
He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it
were possible, the hour might pass from Him. And He said, “Abba,
Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me;
nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” Mark 14:35-36
And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down
and prayed, saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away
from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” Luke 22:41-42
Note: Jesus Christ would be betrayed into the hands of sinners for suffering and death.
So, He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying
the same words. Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are
you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand, and the
Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be
going. See, My betrayer is at hand.” Matthew 26:44-46
Then He came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping
and resting? It is enough! The hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is
being betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. See,
My betrayer is at hand.” Mark 14:41-42
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the
elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber,
with swords and clubs? When I was with you daily in the temple, you did
not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
Luke 22:52-53
Note: The suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ would fulfill Scripture.
In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as
against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with
you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. But all this was
done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all
the disciples forsook Him and fled. Matthew 26:55-56
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a
robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I was daily with you in the
temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be
fulfilled.” Mark 14:48-49
After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that
the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full
of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour
wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had
received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head,
He gave up His spirit. John 19:28-30
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I
was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were
written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning
Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the
Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was
necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third
day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in
His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:44-47
Fulfillment of Scripture for the suffering and death of Jesus Christ
Note: The Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah being afflicted.
He is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted
with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was
despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely, He has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God,
and afflicted. Isaiah 53:3-4
Note: The New Testament fulfillment of Jesus Christ being afflicted.
And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What
is it these men testify against You?” But Jesus kept silent. And the
high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the
living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Jesus said
to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you
will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and
coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes,
saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of
witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think?”
They answered and said, “He is deserving of death.” Then they spat in
His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their
hands, saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”
Matthew 26:62-68
And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do
You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” But He
kept silent and answered nothing. Again, the high priest asked Him,
saying to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus
said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand
of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” Then the high
priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need do we have of
witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” And they
all condemned Him to be deserving of death. Then some began to spit on
Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him,
“Prophesy!” And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Mark 14:60-65
Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. And having
blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying,
“Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” And many other things they
blasphemously spoke against Him. Luke 22:63-65
The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.
Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in
synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret
I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me
what I said to them. Indeed, they know what I said.” And when He had
said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with
the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like
that?” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the
evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?” Then Annas sent Him bound to
Caiaphas the high priest. John 18:19-24
Note: The Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah being abused.
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our
iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His
stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have
turned, everyone, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the
iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:5-6
Note: The New Testament fulfillment of Jesus Christ being abused.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and
gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a
scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put
it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee
before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they
spat on Him and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they
had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him,
and led Him away to be crucified. Matthew 27:27-31
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and
they called together the whole garrison. And they clothed Him with
purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and
began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they struck Him on
the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they
worshiped Him. And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off
Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. Mark
15:16-20
And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him.
Then Herod, with his men of war, treated Him with contempt and mocked
Him, arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him back to Pilate. Luke
23:10-11
So, then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a
crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple
robe. Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him
with their hands. John 19:1-3
Note: The Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah being silent.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He
was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers
is silent, so He opened not His mouth. Isaiah 53:7
Note: The New Testament fulfillment of Jesus Christ being silent.
Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him,
saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “It is as
you say.” And while He was being accused by the chief priests and
elders, He answered nothing. Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear
how many things they testify against You?” But He answered him not one
word, so that the governor marveled greatly. Matthew 27:11-14
Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with
the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led
Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You
the King of the Jews?” He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”
And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered
nothing. Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing?
See how many things they testify against You!” But Jesus still answered
nothing, so that Pilate marveled. Mark 15:1-5
When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean. And
as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent
Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Now when Herod
saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad; for he had desired for a long time
to see Him, because he had heard many things about Him, and he hoped to
see some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned Him with many words,
but He answered him nothing. Luke 23:6-9
Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
And Pilate said to them, “Behold the Man!” Therefore, when the chief
priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify Him,
crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “You take Him and crucify Him, for I
find no fault in Him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and
according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son
of God.” Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more
afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, “Where
are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate said to Him,
“Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to
crucify You, and power to release You?” John 19:5-10
Note: The Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah being judged.
He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who will declare His
generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the
transgressions of My people He was stricken. Isaiah 53:8
Note: The New Testament fulfillment of Jesus Christ being judged.
Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called
Christ?” They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!” Then the
governor said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they cried out all the
more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!” When Pilate saw that he could not
prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and
washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the
blood of this just Person. You see to it.” And all the people answered
and said, “His blood be on us and on our children.” Then he released
Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to
be crucified. Matthew 27:22-26
Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do
with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” So they cried out again,
“Crucify Him!” Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!” So, Pilate, wanting to
gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus,
after he had scourged Him, to be crucified. Mark 15:12-15
Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them.
But they shouted, saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Then he said to
them the third time, “Why, what evil has He done? I have found no
reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go.”
But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be
crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests
prevailed. So, Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they
requested. And he released to them the one they requested, who for
rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered
Jesus to their will. Luke 23:20-25
From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out,
saying, “If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever
makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.” When Pilate therefore
heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment
seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth
hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” But they cried out,
“Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them,
“Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no
king but Caesar!” Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then
they took Jesus and led Him away. John 19:12-16
Note: The Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah crying to God on the cross.
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from
helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? O My God, I cry in the
daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season and am not
silent. Psalms 22:1-2
Note: The New Testament fulfillment of Jesus Christ crying to God on the cross.
Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama
sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Matthew 27:46
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi,
Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have
You forsaken Me?” Mark 15:34
Note: Old Testament prophecy about the mocking of the Messiah on the cross.
But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men and despised by the
people. All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they
shake the head, saying, “He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him;
Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him!” Psalms 22:6-8
Note: New Testament fulfillment of the mocking of Jesus Christ on the cross.
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying,
“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself!
If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” Likewise, the
chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, “He
saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let
Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted
in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am
the Son of God.’” Matthew 27:39-43
And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying,
“Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save
Yourself, and come down from the cross!” Likewise, the chief priests
also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved
others; Himself He cannot save. Let the Christ, the King of Israel,
descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Mark 15:29-32
And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered,
saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the
chosen of God.” The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him
sour wine, and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save
Yourself.” Luke 23:35-37
Note: Old Testament prophecy about the crucifixion of the Messiah.
I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint; My heart
is like wax; It has melted within Me. My strength is dried up like a
potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the
dust of death. For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the
wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count
all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among
them, and for My clothing they cast lots. Psalms 22:14-18
Note: New Testament fulfillment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that
it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My
garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Sitting down,
they kept watch over Him there. And they put up over His head the
accusation written against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Matthew 27:35-37
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots
for them to determine what every man should take. Now it was the third
hour, and they crucified Him. And the inscription of His accusation was
written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS. Mark 15:24-26
And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they
crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other
on the left. Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not
know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. And
the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered,
saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the
chosen of God.” The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him
sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save
Yourself.” And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of
Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Luke 23:33-38
And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a
Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him,
and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.
Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:
JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then many of the Jews read
this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city;
and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. Therefore, the chief
priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the
Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.”’” Pilate answered,
“What I have written, I have written.” Then the soldiers, when they had
crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier
a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from
the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us
not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the
Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments
among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore, the
soldiers did these things. John 19:17-24
Note: The Old Testament prophecy about the burial of the Messiah.
And they made His grave with the wicked — but with the rich at His
death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His
mouth. Isaiah 53:9
Note: The New Testament fulfillment about the burial of Jesus Christ.
Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named
Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went
to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the
body to be given to him. When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it
in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn
out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the
tomb and departed. Matthew 27:57-60
Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is,
the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council
member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and
taking courage, went into Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion,
he asked him if He had been dead for some time. So, when he found out
from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. Then he bought fine
linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in
a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock and rolled a stone against
the door of the tomb. Mark 15:42-46
Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and
just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was
from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for
the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of
Jesus. Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb
that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. That
day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. Luke 23:50-54
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but
secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away
the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So, he came and took
the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night,
also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred
pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus and bound it in strips of
linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the
place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a
new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus,
because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby. John
19:38-42
Note: The Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah's payment for sin and the resurrection.
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When
You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall
prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His
hand. He shall see the labor of His soul and be satisfied. By His
knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear
their iniquities. Isaiah 53:10-11
Note: The New Testament fulfillment of Jesus Christ's payment for sin and the resurrection.
And you are witnesses
of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but
tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on
high.” Luke 24:44-49
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by
God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in
your midst, as you yourselves also know— Him, being delivered by the
determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless
hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having
loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should
be held by it. For David says concerning Him: I foresaw the LORD always
before my face, for He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
Therefore, my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover, my
flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You have made known
to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’
“Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David,
that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath
to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would
raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke
concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left
in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised
up, of which we are all witnesses. Acts 2:22-32
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you
are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless
you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third
day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then
by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at
once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have
fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the
apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out
of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to
be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by
the grace of God, I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in
vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the
grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so
we preach and so you believed. 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
